The full step by step guide, without the Play Store, with the pitfalls specific to this device.
Turn off Auto Blocker
Recent Galaxy phones turn on Auto Blocker by default, which blocks any install outside the Galaxy Store and the Play Store, even from an allowed source. Open Settings, then Security and privacy, then Auto Blocker, and turn it off for the install. You can turn it back on afterwards.
Allow install from your source
Just like on any Android phone, when you open the APK, allow Install unknown apps for the source you used, Samsung Internet or My Files, in the security settings offered. Go back, the install continues.
Play Protect warns you
Play Protect flags an app as ‘rarely downloaded’ because it does not come from the Play Store. That is expected for a direct download. Tap ‘Install anyway’ to continue.
Updates are not automatic
Outside the store, Android will not update the app on its own. To install a newer version, come back to this page and download the new file. The map tells you when an update is available.
You can turn Auto Blocker back on once the app is installed.
